The photograph

Take your time with this one. Any clear photograph will work.

The vessel

Fired and glazed by hand, so the tone varies slightly across the surface. That is the finish, not a fault.

About this piece

Hand-thrown ceramic, glazed, with the portrait on the face

A friend lost a lurcher and asked for something she could keep on the shelf rather than in a cupboard. The first one was thrown badly and we threw it away. The fourth one is still on her mantel.

Each vessel is thrown on the wheel, dried slowly, painted, glazed and fired. Because it is thrown rather than moulded, no two are quite the same shape, and the glaze will pool a little differently on each one.

Take as long as you need with the wording. We will hold the order open and nothing is fired until you tell us, and if you would rather not decide the words yet, we will send it without any.

The glaze is sealed and the vessel is watertight. It is meant to be handled — the surface will take on a soft sheen where your hands rest, which is how these are supposed to age.

  • I could not approve it for two weeks

I ordered this four days after we said goodbye and then could not bring myself to look at the proof. Nobody chased me. When I finally opened it, it was right, and it arrived three days later. The glaze has a soft sheen where I pick it up now.

  • Heavier than it looks

The stoneware has real weight to it, which I did not expect from the photographs. It is thrown rather than moulded, so the shape is very slightly irregular in a way that reads as made by a person. On the mantel.

  • Sizing advice was right

I was between the 300 ml and the 650 ml and took the larger one on their recommendation. It is roomier than we need, but I would rather that than the other way round. The felted base means it does not scratch the shelf.

  • They talked me out of the terracotta

I wanted terracotta and they emailed to say that for the photograph I had sent, ivory would hold the portrait better and the glaze would not compete with the painting. They were right, and it would have been easy to just take the extra fifteen dollars.
