The First Holidays Without Them
For everyone setting one less bowl this season

The lights are going up, the house smells like cinnamon, and there's a space by the fireplace nobody else seems to notice. If this is your first holiday season without your pet, this is for you.
The house is getting ready for the holidays.
The lights are coming down from the attic. The kitchen smells like cinnamon again. Somewhere, a playlist you only play in December has started.
And there is a space in the room that nobody else seems to notice.
The spot by the fireplace where they used to curl up. The corner of the couch that still feels warm in your memory. The stocking you are not sure whether to hang.
If this is your first holiday season without them, this is for you.

The Season Remembers Them Too
Holidays are made of rituals, and so many of ours had a pet in the middle of them.
The dog who "helped" unwrap every single present.
The cat who treated the tree like their own personal kingdom.
The nose pressed to the oven door. The jingle of a collar when guests rang the bell. The one who always found the warmest lap at the table.
So when the season comes back, it brings them with it. A song, a smell, a ribbon on the floor, and suddenly your heart is right back there.
That isn't you being "too sensitive." That is how deeply you loved.
You Don't Have to Be Merry on Schedule
People will tell you it was "just a pet." People will ask you to smile for the photo.
You are allowed to step outside for a minute.
You are allowed to skip the party, or to go and leave early.
You are allowed to laugh at a memory and cry thirty seconds later.
Grief doesn't take the holidays off, and it doesn't need to. There is no right way to get through this season. There is only your way.
Keep a Place for Them
Many of the families we paint for tell us the same thing: the hardest part is pretending nothing has changed. What helps is giving the love somewhere to go.
Light a candle for them on the first night. Hang their stocking anyway, and fill it with notes from everyone who loved them. Donate a bag of food or a warm blanket to a local shelter in their name. Say their name out loud at dinner, and let the stories come.
Some people find comfort in a small keepsake they can hold. A hand-painted portrait ornament on the mantel, so they are part of the tree again. A mini framed portrait that fits in your palm on the days you need to hold them close. A little portrait charm on your bag, so they come along to every holiday visit.
Whatever you choose, it doesn't have to be big. It only has to be theirs.
Until We Meet Again
This year, the house will feel a little quieter. And that is okay.
Because the warmth they brought into your home didn't leave with them. It is in the way you still glance at the door. In the treat you almost bought at the store. In the love that made this season ache in the first place.
They were never just part of the holidays.
They were part of what made it feel like home.
Wherever you are this season, we are holding a little light for them with you.
Forever missed. Forever loved. Forever part of your story. 🐾
