About this piece
We painted the first of these for a customer who had a photograph she did not want to keep looking at on a screen. She wanted it on a wall, at eye height, in a frame. That is still the whole brief.
We start from a photograph you already have — a phone snap is usually enough. One of our painters works from it in acrylic, building the coat in layers so the light sits where it sat in the photograph, and simplifying the background to a single flat tone so the animal carries.
Before any paint goes down you get a proof. Change the crop, the tone, the frame, the wording — as many times as it takes. Nothing is painted until you say it is right.

Exactly her ears
I sent a photo taken on a kitchen floor in 2016 and the proof came back unmistakably her — the one ear that never went up properly, all of it. I asked for the background to be warmer and had a new proof the next morning. The painting is better than the proof was.

They repainted the proof four times
I was the difficult customer. I asked for a different crop, then a different background, then went back to the first background. Not once did anyone sound annoyed, and the fourth proof was right. The stand was in the box, which I had forgotten about.

Worth the wait
Took six days rather than five, which they emailed me about on day two. The frame is heavier than I expected and the walnut tone in the background is lovely against it. Hung it the day it arrived.

Slightly smaller than I pictured
The painting is genuinely beautiful and better than the photograph I sent deserved. I should have paid the extra for the 11 × 14 — the 8 × 10 is a little small for the wall I had in mind. My fault, not theirs.
