About this piece
The first one was a tortoiseshell called Marge, painted against a deep blue with far more space around her than we would normally leave. Her owner hung it above the stairs. We have used that spacing ever since.
We did not expect this to be the piece people ask for most. It started as a joke for a customer whose cat already behaved like minor aristocracy, and it turned out that a lot of animals do.
The animal is painted straight — no costume, no crown, no velvet curtain. What makes it read as a royal portrait is the format: the arch, the gilt line inside the frame, the width of the background around the head. It is the composition that does the work.

The gilding is real
I expected printed gold and it is metal leaf, dulling very slightly where you handle it. The proof took three goes because my boy is mostly black and kept disappearing into the background. They suggested the pale grey and were right.

Worth the seven days
It is a slow piece and they tell you so up front. What I did not expect was how much of the seven days was the proof conversation — four rounds, all of them useful. It reads like a portrait rather than a pet picture.

Ridiculous and perfect
I ordered this as a joke for my husband and it arrived as a genuinely handsome painting. No crown, no costume — just Marge against a deep blue with a lot more space around her head than you would think to give a cat. It is above the stairs now.
