About this piece
Two dogs, one sofa, one very old photograph. The customer sent us a scan that was almost unusable and asked if we could make something of it. We could, and this format is why — the extra room is what let both of them sit in the frame without crowding.
A canvas takes paint differently from a panel: the weave holds a little of it back, so the brush marks stay visible and the surface has a slight tooth you can see from an angle.
We paint this one to the edge, which means the composition has to be built for a rectangle rather than fitted into one. It suits a head-and-shoulders crop and it suits two animals better than anything else we make.

Two dogs, one sofa
The photograph I had was a scan of a print from 2009 and barely usable. They said so honestly, asked for anything else I had, and between the two built something where both of them fit without either being crowded out. The weave shows through the paint, which I like.

Bigger than I measured
The 16 × 20 is genuinely large. Measure your wall first — I did not, and it has ended up in a different room than planned. The painting itself is the best thing in the house.

No frame, and it does not need one
I was nervous about unframed. It is painted to the edge and the stretcher bars are solid, so it sits flat against the wall with nothing between the paint and the room. Ticking the two-animal box was the right call for a 16 × 20.
